This month, our team dives into their toolkits to share some of the most impactful resources they use to support both children and adults across residential, foster, and care settings. At Therapeutic Blueprint, we understand the unique challenges faced by individuals within a care setting, as well as the dedicated professionals who support them. Our therapists and counsellors are passionate about providing therapeutic support that meets individuals where they are, fostering growth, resilience, and healing.
Here, we spotlight some of the go-to resources and approaches our team uses daily to enhance therapeutic support within foster and residential care environments:
1. Therapeutic Storytelling & Play Therapy Tools
For younger clients, storytelling and play therapy can be incredibly effective tools. These methods allow children to process complex emotions through a medium that feels safe and accessible. Our team recommends expressive tools like puppets, role-play scenarios, and visual storytelling aids.
These are particularly useful in both one-on-one and group therapy sessions to help children navigate difficult topics, build emotional vocabulary, and learn self-soothing strategies.
2. Trauma-Informed Worksheets and Activities
Many individuals within foster and residential care settings have experienced trauma, which can impact how they respond to stress and interact with others. Trauma-informed worksheets, which might include activities for grounding, self-reflection, and emotional regulation, are invaluable in helping children and adults process experiences at their own pace. We often use these resources as a foundation for creating a structured, supportive space for clients to explore and express their feelings.
3. Mindfulness and Sensory Tools
Mindfulness practices help focus on the present moment, which can be a powerful counterbalance to the anxieties and emotional fluctuations someone may face. Tools such as mindfulness colouring books, breathing exercises, and sensory aids like weighted blankets or fidget toys are excellent for both children and adults. They offer a way to engage with the present, encouraging a sense of calm and control.
4. Training and Support for Care Staff
In addition to supporting children, our team believes in empowering caregivers and staff. By providing them with training on best practices in trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, and emotional first aid, we ensure that everyone involved has the tools needed to create a safe, supportive environment. These tools can include both resources they can use with children within their care. as well as self-care practices to maintain their own well-being.
We’d love to hear from other professionals—what tools and resources do you find essential for supporting your teams and the individuals you work with?
Together, we can foster environments where growth and healing thrive.
